FAQ

Does the electric bike recharge whilst I am pedalling?

No, it does not. Some manufacturers do advertise that the bikes regenerate whilst braking or going downhill. This information is misleading.

How do I charge the battery?

Pretty basic, you plug a charger into the outlet and into the battery. You can do it while that battery is connected to the bike, or you can take it with you. The charger is the size of a regular laptop adapter. You will receive one with the E-Cargo Bike.

Should I completely drain the battery before charging?

On some cheaper bikes with different style cells, this is necessary. However, all of our electric bikes feature quality batteries, so this is not required. It is best to top up our batteries constantly, even if you have only travelled 10 km.

How long is the charging time of the battery?

All our electric bikes use lithium-ion battery packs. The 504Wh (36V, 14Ah) battery pack will take about up to 4.5 hours to recharge 100% if flat or 2.5 hours at 80%.

How should I look after my battery?

When riding in cold conditions, allow the battery some time to come to room temperature before charging. As long as you don’t leave your battery empty for long periods, this is all you need to do.

Where are our cargo bikes made?

We weld, paint and assemble all Hagen Cargo Bikes at our workshop in Tallinn, Estonia. If you are around, you are more than welcome to pay us a visit.

I have seen cheaper (electric) cargo bikes. What’s the difference?

Our frames are made of Chromoly steel – they flex more, fatigue less than aluminium and provide a better riding experience. Steel frames can take a beating like no other bike frame material. Steel is real – It’s the original bike frame material. The type of steel we use is even used in space expeditions, which means its light, durable, and expensive. Also, producing in Europe allows us to comply with sustainability standars, but that comes with a price. On a nutshell Hagen Cargo Bikes are worth more because our products are made from the best materials, we use the best components and we work with the best qualified professionals. We choose quality over price.

How fast will Hagen cargo electric bikes go?

All electric bikes are governed by law to an assisted speed of 25km/h. You can, of course, pedal the bike faster. However, you will be using your pedal power as the assistance will drop off at 25km/h.

Does it matter if the electronics get wet?

Electronic items on all electric bikes are sealed units, from the motor to battery to head unit. They are all weatherproof and designed for all-purpose use, i.e. mountain biking, where you might run through puddles.

Your Hagen electric cargo bike is expected to handle this without any issues. Having said that, we do recommend that you avoid submerging your Hagen E-cargo bike completely. If you happen to find yourself in the lake with your bike, allow the bicycle to dry off before turning back on and returning to the trail.

Can I use your bikes without pedalling or does it have a throttle?

None of our cargo bikes is fitted with a throttle. Our electric cargo bikes feature crank drive motors, and throttle cannot be added to any of our bikes. However, you may wish to try a crank drive bike as you’d be surprised how easy you can to move in a high assistance mode with minimal effort. EU law means most self-propelled bikes are classed as motor vehicles (motorcycles) and thus need a driving license and insurance to use on public roads. So, there is no fun in that.

How should I clean my Hagen electric bike?

Clean your eBike as you would clean your regular bike. Use a hose, sponge and preferably a decent cleaner. If possible, clean it after every ride to maintain it at tip-top conditions.

After cleaning your bike, remember to re-apply lubrication to the chain with a decent dry lube (do not apply lubrication to a belt-driven bicycle). Finally, please resist using pressure washers on your bike. Not because of the electrics, but high-pressure water can push factory grease from the internal bearings leaving them dry for the next ride. Your bike is your friend, give it some love as regularly as possible.

Can I retrofit the Brose system?

No, Brose systems can be retrofitted to other bikes (not clear ). Our bikes are engineered explicitly out of the factory to allow the correct mountings/stress of running the electric motor. You can purchase spares if you already own one a Hagen Cargo Bike. But you cannot buy an integral part of each system (the drive unit) on its own.

My electric bike turns on by itself, what is wrong?

This is common behavior. The bikes have an IoT module inside with its own battery. The IoT module is connected to the internet via SIM-card and consuming energy. If the bike is used regularly, the IoT charges itself from the bike’s main battery. If the bike is not used or only used for very short rides, then the IoT module will power on the bike to charge the IoT’s battery. So it’s nothing to worry about and does not occur when using the bike daily.

How much are the running costs of owning an electric cargo bike?

The running costs of owning an electric cargo bike are very low compared to other modes of transport.

In average, you will spend about 60€ per year on electricity, 200€ on maintenance and 100€ on IoT subscription. You can expect to run the eBike for 360€ per year and non-electric bike for 200€ per year.

Cargo bikes come in two sizes:

One size fit all (53 cm) – for riders from 165 cm and upwards. Perfect for sharing the bicycle with the whole family.

My front wheel is wobbling?

Most often, the problem occurs when the front headset has come a bit loose. It can be very easily fixed by:

  1. Loosening the bolt marked with red arrow
  2. Tightening the bolt marked with purple arrow. The headset should not have any play, but should rotate freely.
  3. Tightening bolt marked with red arrow again.

Where is my frame number located?

The frame number is engraved to the small triangle where the frame meets the cargo area.
